MORE NEW TEACHERS INTO BALLARAT SCHOOLS

30 January 2023

The Andrews Labor Government is boosting Victoria’s teaching workforce with schools in Ballarat set to get more classroom support.

Local schools have employed 14 new teachers and teaching students thanks to incentive programs created by the Labor Government.

Mount Rowan Secondary College and Ballarat High School now have an extra maths teacher each.

Mount Rowan Secondary College also has two new teaching students, Mount Clear College has three, Woodmans Hill Secondary College has two, Phoenix P-12 Community College has three and Ballarat Specialist School has one. Beaufort Secondary College also has one extra teaching student.

A $43.4 million dollar investment since 2021 is reforming employment-based teaching degrees and fast tracking a further 1,200 student teachers into classrooms by 2025.

This includes seven fast-tracked Master of Teaching courses through Victoria’s best universities, which provides students with undergraduate degrees a quality teaching education while providing paid in-classroom experience.

On top of this, the 2022/23 Budget included $9.9 million to continue incentive payments for an extra 150 teachers in areas of highest need.

Nearly 5,000 more teachers have become registered since 2020, due to focused programs encouraging people to take up the professions or return to the classroom.

This continued investment comes after the Government’s Excellence in Teacher Education reforms, designed to raise the quality of teaching – ensuring the profession attracts the best and brightest to give Victorian government students the best education.
